Description

Movicol is a laxative containing macrogol 3350 with added electrolytes, used for the relief of constipation, including long-term (chronic) constipation, and for the management of medically diagnosed faecal impaction.

Macrogol is a high molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) that is pharmacologically inactive and minimally absorbed by the body. It works by retaining water in the bowel, which helps soften stools and supports easier bowel movements. The included electrolytes help reduce the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance during use.

Movicol works through a four-step process:

1. Draws water into the bowel to hydrate and increase stool volume

2. Softens stool consistency

3. Supports normal bowel movement

4. Helps lubricate stool for easier passage

Directions for Use

Adults and children over 12 years:

1. Empty the contents of one sachet into a glass

2. Add 125 mL of water

3. Stir until the powder is fully dissolved and the solution appears clear or slightly cloudy

4. Drink the solution immediately

A flavouring such as orange cordial may be added if desired.

Warnings

Do not use Movicol Lemon-Lime if you have been diagnosed with:

• Intestinal obstruction

• Perforation of the intestinal wall

• Severe inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon)

• Paralytic ileus

• Known allergy to macrogol or any listed ingredient

The prepared Movicol solution does not replace normal daily fluid intake. Adequate hydration should be maintained while using this product.

Laxatives may affect the absorption of other medicines. Monitoring may be required when starting or stopping regular use. Discuss this with a healthcare professional.

If pregnant, consult a doctor before use. Movicol may reduce the effectiveness of fluid thickeners used for swallowing difficulties.
