Ferritin is the protein that stores iron in the body, and a low ferritin level is one of the earliest signs of iron deficiency. This TouchBio kit checks ferritin from a small finger-prick blood sample and gives a result in about 5 minutes. Two tests are included, which lets you confirm a result or check again later. Reported overall accuracy is greater than 95 percent.

Directions for Use
Bring all components to room temperature first and read the instruction leaflet. Wash your hands in warm water and dry them. Clean the fingertip with the alcohol pad and let it dry. Prick the side of the fingertip with the lancet and wipe away the first drop. Draw blood into the capillary dropper up to the marked line, then add it to the sample well of the cassette followed by the stated number of buffer drops. Lay the cassette flat and read at 5 minutes.

Reading Your Result
• Two lines, at T and C: ferritin is within the normal range and iron deficiency is unlikely.
• Control line (C) only: ferritin is below the test threshold, which may indicate iron deficiency. Speak with your doctor.
• No control line: the test is invalid. Repeat using the second cassette.

Warnings
• For in vitro diagnostic self-testing. This test screens only, it does not diagnose. Do not start or stop iron supplements based on the result without medical advice.
• Ferritin can be raised by inflammation or infection, which may mask a low iron store. Discuss any concerns with your doctor.
• Lancets are sharp and single use. Never share a lancet and dispose of used lancets in a sharps container.
• Store between 2 and 30 degrees Celsius away from sunlight. Do not use past the expiry date.
• Keep out of reach of children.

Additional Information
Symptoms often linked with low iron include ongoing tiredness, shortness of breath on exertion, pale skin and reduced concentration. A result outside the normal range is a prompt to see your doctor, not a diagnosis on its own.
